Objective 1: Divide monomials
• When dividing exponential forms that have the same base, we can subtract
the divisor’s exponents from the dividend ’s exponent and keep the same
base
• To divide monomials :
o Divide the coefficients
o For like bases , subtract the exponent of the divisor base from the
exponent of the dividend base and keep the base. If the bases have
the same exponent, then they divide out becoming “1”
Objective 2: Divide a polynomial by a monomial
• To divide a polynomial by a monomial
o Divide each term in the polynomial dividend by the monomial
divisor
o Simplify
Objective 3: Find a missing factor
• To find the missing factor, isolate the (?) by dividing what is being
multiplied by it
Objective 4: Find the G.C.F. out of a polynomial
• Factored form – A number or expression written as a product of factors
• To factor a monomial G .C.F out of a given polynomial:
o Find the G.C.F. of the terms that make up the polynomial
o Rewrite the polynomial as a product of the G .C.F. and parentheses
that contain the quotient of the given polynomial and the G.C.F.
given polynomial = G.C.F. ยท ()
o Simplify in the parentheses
