APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR MATHMATICS ADJUNCT TEACHING
Please note that this is not an advertisement for
employment. The gathered information is intended to answer
procedural questions about potential employment of part-time adjunct faculty.
This includes an interest in
online teaching.
The Department of Applied Arts & Sciences periodically
hires part-time adjunct instructors from a pool of
eligible applicants. Completed files will be valid for one academic year, and
teaching positions will be offered
when they become available. For all Math Courses the minimum requirements for
applying faculty shall be a
master’s degree in the teaching field or a closely related academic discipline
with at least nine (9) graduatelevel
semester credits in the academic discipline.
• Current adjuncts should submit (1) a letter indicating
current file should remain active and (2) an updated
resume/CV.
Brief descriptions of Math (M) courses are published in
the current UM Undergraduate Catalog:
1. Prealgebra
Offered every term . Arithmetic and basic algebra skills needed for Introductory
Algebra. Topics include integers
and rational numbers , decimals and percentages with applications, ratios and
proportions with applications, single
variable linear equations with applications , exponents, factoring, and an
introduction to polynomials. Credit does not
count toward a certificate or degree but will receive Financial Aid credits.
Credit does not count toward Associate of
Arts or Baccalaureate degrees.
2. Introductory Algebra
Offered every term. Review of arithmetic principles of integers and rational
numbers, linear equations in one or two
unknowns , and operations with polynomials and rational expressions. Credit does
not count toward an Associate of
Arts or Baccalaureate degree but will receive Financial Aid credits.
3. Intermediate Algebra
Offered autumn and spring. Topics include linear equations and systems of
linear equations, inequalities,
applications and graphing ; polynomials; rational expressions and equations ;
radicals, rational exponents and
complex numbers ; quadratic equations; introduction to exponential and
logarithmic functions. Credit does not count
toward Associate of Arts or Baccalaureate degrees.
4. Contemporary Mathematics
Offered every term. Prereq. An introduction to mathematical ideas and their
impact on society. Intended for
students wishing to satisfy the general education mathematics requirement.
5. Industrial Mathematics
Offered autumn and spring. Designed to provide the mathematical background
necessary for success in the
industrial areas. Topics covered include percent, ratio proportion , formula
evaluation , basic algebra and geometry
concepts, trigonometry , measurement, statistics, and graphing. markdowns,
inventory turnover, and other basic
formulas. M111 does not satisfy University of Montana general education math
requirements.
6. Probability and Linear Math
Systems of linear equations and matrix algebra. Introduction to probability
with emphasis on models and
probabilistic reasoning. Examples of applications of the material in many
fields.
7. College Algebra
Offered autumn and spring. The study of functions and their inverses:
polynomial, rational, exponential, and
logarithmic functions .
8. Applied Calculus
Offered spring. Introduction to differentiation and integration of
elementary function. Introduction to ordinary
differential equations . Emphasis is on applications in technical fields
including electronics technology. Graphing
calculators used.

than UM Composition or Literature Faculty.
