Intermediate Algebra
Course Description: This course provides a smooth transition from
arithmetic to the
more abstract skills and reasoning abilities developed in a beginning algebra
course .
Basic concepts include integers and real numbers , radicals, solving equations
and
inequalities , exponents and polynomials , factoring, rational expressions ,
graphing linear
equations and inequalities , systems of linear equations and inequalities, and
quadratic
equations . Technology will be used as an instructional tool in this course.
Required Text: INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA Graphs and Models, 2nd edition by
Bittinger, Ellenbogen, and Johnson
Required Calculator : Texas Instruments TI-83 or
TI-83 Plus
The required text and calculator must be purchased and
brought to class in order to avoid
being dropped from the class.
Required Grade: A “C” or better in order to take
Mathematics 1050
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of
this course, the student should
understand each of the following:
Simplifying algebraic expressions;
Using properties of exponents ;
Solving linear equations and inequalities;
Graphing linear equations and inequalities;
Solving systems of linear equations and inequalities;
Solving quadratic equations ;
Applying all concepts listed above.
Evaluation: A series of four tests with a value of
100 points each will be given on 9/10,
10/1, 10/24, and 11/14. Class participation including pop quizzes and homework
will
count up to 100 points. The final exam will be comprehensive in nature and will
count
200 points. The final average score will be the total points divided by 7.
